Ten Tips To Have A Happy Healthy Cat

For happy healthy cat month in September, we are sharing tips on how to have a happy healthy cat if you are getting a kitten.  Getting a new kitten is an exhilarating feeling.  They are soft, cute, and cuddly.  Almost irresistible, kittens soften even the toughest of hearts.  The food and care plans you choose can make a difference in the health and happiness of your cat.  It is great to get things started off on the right foot, so here are ten starter tips to have a happy healthy cat.

Ten tips to have a happy healthy cat

  1.  Continue feeding your cat their “normal” diet, but slowly introduce high-quality cat food that is high in taurine and protein but low in carbs and fillers into the mix.  Consulting a vet may help you to know what best serves your cat.  After your cat adjusts, let your cat feed exclusively on the high-quality food.
  1.  Feed your kitten from a shallow plate at least three times a day.  Kittens are tiny in size and need easy access to their food.  Include snacks in their diet, especially during the growing stage.  Small portions of high protein foods such as boneless fish, cooked egg yolk, and cooked or raw liver will help them build strong bones.
  1.  Feed your kitten regularly while he/she is growing or under six months old of age.
  1.  Dry or wet?  You can find a balance or perhaps go for dry food in the day and wet food in the evening.
  1.  Always have clean and fresh water available throughout the day.  Remember water is enough, no other liquid is required.  Avoid cow milk as it causes tummy aches in cats.
  1.  Keep your kitten in the same room with the litter box for the first few days when you bring your kitten home, so that your kitten may get used to it.  If you haven’t had a cat before, you may find this article helpful on How To Potty Train A Cat.
  1.  Monitor your kitten closely for safety purposes.  They are small and curious, and can easily get into trouble such as getting caught between appliances and furniture, falling into a toilet, or getting stepped on.
  1.  Take your kitten for regular checkups and all necessary vaccinations.
  1.  Getting your kitten neutered or spayed makes for a happier healthier cat.  It prevents going into heat, getting pregnant, or spraying urine.
  1.  Play with your kitten regularly.  Kittens love to play.  A piece of string, or crumpled paper, can serve as a toy. When you take time out to play with your kitten, you create a bond.  This bond will remain unshakable for many more years to come.

Love your kitten unconditionally, treat him/her well, and watch your kitten blossom into a beautiful, healthy happy cat.

If you live in the Los Angeles area, the local shelters often have kittens you can adopt.  To see available kittens in Los Angeles go to Los Angeles Animal Services.

We love that you are finding our articles helpful.

  • Great article on kitten care, these are some key activities and steps people seem to neglect when they get a newborn. The part about the cows’ milk was especially great because even though kitties love it, its not very good for them. Like kids and too much candy during Halloween When my two cats were kittens, they didn’t give you a choice to play with them as it was basically play with us, or get scratched until you do! Great article, wanted to share these tips with a client
